Cliff Carvings on Sima Mountain

The cliff carvings on Sima Mountain are a cultural relic protection unit of Hubei Province.

The cliff carvings on Sima Mountain are located in Hong’an County and date back to the Ming Dynasty. They are the ink works of local figures such as Geng Dingxiang and Zhou Sijiu. Geng Dingxiang, who passed the imperial examination in the 35th year of the Jiajing reign and rose to the position of Minister of Revenue, returned to his hometown in his later years; Zhou Sijiu was also a Jiajing-era imperial scholar and served as Prefect of Qiongzhou. There are four inscriptions in total, including “Riding the Wind and Lashing the Thunder,” “Resting on Stone and Lodging in Clouds,” “Roaring Lion,” and “Heavenly Horse Soaring Across the Sky.” The calligraphy features tight structure, smooth lines, and powerful strokes, demonstrating high artistic value.
