Buildings collapsed, chimneys snapped, the ground deformed, sand and water erupted, roads cracked, railway tracks bent, derricks tilted, river channels were blocked, and the century-old industrial city was flattened in an instant. The severity of the disaster and the magnitude of the losses were rare in history. After the quake, with the approval of the State Council, seven earthquake ruins were preserved: the Tangshan Iron and Steel Company Club, the office building of the Tangshan Ceramics Factory, the steel casting workshop of the Tangshan Locomotive and Rolling Stock Works, the surface displacement in the courtyard of Tangshan No. 10 Middle School, the tree row displacement on Jixiang Road, the garage of the Tangbai Road Food Company, and the library building of Hebei Mining and Metallurgical Institute (now Hebei University of Technology). Among them, the well-preserved earthquake ruin is the former library building of Hebei University of Technology.
