Dachengshan Site

The Dachengshan Site is a cultural heritage site protected at the provincial level in Hebei Province.

The Dachengshan Site is located on the eastern slope of Dacheng Mountain on the west bank of the Dou River in Lubei District, Tangshan City, covering a total area of approximately 9,000 square meters.

Discovered in the spring of 1955, the site was investigated by the Hebei Provincial Cultural Bureau and excavated in the autumn of that year. Its cultural relics are quite abundant, including jade artifacts such as gui (ceremonial tablets), spades, and qiong (ornamental objects); stone tools such as axes, adzes, perforated stone spades, stone spears, scrapers, and stone hoes; bone tools such as bone awls, needles, arrowheads, knives, and fishhooks; and a wide variety of pottery items. The pottery materials include clay gray ware, clay red ware, fine black clay ware, fine white clay ware, and sand-tempered gray and red wares. Vessel shapes comprise jars, tripods, ding (cauldrons), bowls, cups, and basins. In terms of decoration, besides polished plain surfaces, common patterns include cord marks, combed lines, and added coil designs. The thin, eggshell-like black and white pottery reflects significant advancements in pottery-making techniques.

This site represents a cultural relic from the Neolithic Age and shares many similarities with the Longshan Culture found in Shandong and Henan, as well as with the Paleolithic cultural remains in the Inner Mongolia region. It provides important physical evidence for studying the cultural integration between the Central Plains and northern regions during the late Neolithic Age. It was designated as a provincial-level cultural heritage site in July 1982.
