Earthquake Ruins of the Former Library Building of Hebei Institute of Mining and Metallurgy

The earthquake ruins of the former library building of Hebei Institute of Mining and Metallurgy are a cultural relic protection unit of Hebei Province.

The library of Tangshan Engineering Institute was completed in July 1976 and had not yet been put into use. It covers a construction area of 4,049 square meters and is divided into two parts: the reading building and the book storage area. The foundation consists of sandy clay. The reading building has three floors, is 70 meters long, 12 meters wide, and 13.5 meters high. It features a precast cup-shaped column foundation structure. The book storage area has four floors, is 25 meters long, 12 meters wide, and 9.3 meters high, and has a cast-in-place reinforced concrete column foundation. The building is located 4 kilometers northwest of the seismogenic fault zone and within the 11-degree intensity area of the 1976 major earthquake. The western part of the reading building collapsed, and the eastern part cracked. The book storage area sheared and shifted approximately 1 meter to the east and north, with the ground floor completely shattered, while the second to fourth floors remained as one integral structure.
