To the north of Luding Village in Wen'an lies a pond that covers as much as 300 acres during wet years. Its vastness and depth ensure it never dries up, even in times of extreme drought. Due to its ancient origins, numerous legends have emerged. It is believed to have a sea eye at its core, linking it to the Dragon Palace in the East Sea, which the Dragon King traverses each year, earning it the name “Dragon Pond.” Stories tell of giant catfish in the pond wrestling with grazing yellow oxen by the shore. These tales are known across several nearby counties, growing more fantastical the farther they spread.

Captivated by these mystical legends, Feng Guozhang, the then President of the Beiyang Government, was said to have been deeply moved. It is reported that on his way back from Beijing to Hejian, he personally visited the pond in Luding. There, he saw an endless expanse of crystal-clear water, with the legendary “Immortal Island” floating in the middle. Surrounded by dense willow shades and blooming lotuses in the shallow waters, the picturesque scenery made it truly a “dragon’s resting place and immortals’ hiding spot.” He even considered purchasing it to claim as his own.

At that time, local gentry went to Beijing specifically to discuss the matter. However, as Feng Guozhang soon fell from power, the plan was never realized. The deep, clear waters of “Longtan,” the mysterious scenery of the small island in the middle, set off by the backdrop of willows along the shore, create a refreshing and tranquil feeling. The blooming lotuses in the shallows further enchant visitors, making them reluctant to leave.
