Weiwan Site

The Weiwan Site is a cultural heritage conservation unit of Henan Province.

The Weiwan Site is located 150 meters northeast of Weiwan Village, Wencheng Township, 26 kilometers southwest of Suiping County. It is distributed across three hillocks, with a river flowing from west to south along the southern edge of the site. The northern part of the site is very low-lying and forms a swampy area, stretching 700 meters from east to west and 350 meters from north to south, covering an area of approximately 245,000 square meters.

The site has rich cultural layers, with depths ranging between 2 to 4 meters. Staff have collected a large number of pottery shards from the surface, including artifacts such as wide-mouthed zun vessels, urns, duck-billed tripod feet, and bowls. In addition, there is one polished stone axe, one stone knife, and one pottery dog. The pottery shards are predominantly gray, with a significant proportion of red pottery, as well as small amounts of yellow and white pottery. The decorative patterns are mostly plain, with some featuring cord marks, wide blue stripes, checkered patterns, string patterns, and appliqué ridges. The pottery is divided into two types: clay and sand-tempered.

The collected samples confirm that this site is a Neolithic Longshan culture settlement. Based on differences in artifact shapes, pottery material, color, decoration, and other features, the relics can be broadly categorized into Yangshao culture artifacts and Longshan culture artifacts. In 2006, the site was designated as part of the fourth batch of provincial-level cultural heritage conservation units by the People's Government of Henan Province.
