Martyrs' Tower

Martyrs' Tower is a cultural relic protection unit of Henan Province.

Yinglie Village was formerly known as Wanggan Village, located in Anfeng Township, Anyang County. Huanglie Tower, originally called Sanjie Tower, has three brick-arched caves on the ground floor, partitioned rooms on the second floor, and an open space on the third floor. On the night of January 17, 1949, over a thousand troops from the Cixian Security Regiment and other units suddenly surrounded Wanggan Village. The local militia engaged in a desperate battle with the enemy. In the end, 46 cadres and militiamen were forced to retreat to the Sanjie Tower. After several hours of fierce fighting, they repelled multiple enemy attacks. Enraged, the enemy fired artillery shells at the tower and piled up firewood beneath it, setting the tower on fire. The brave militiamen held their ground; apart from five who escaped by jumping off the tower, the remaining 41 cadres and militiamen sacrificed their lives heroically. To commemorate the fallen martyrs, the village was renamed Yinglie Village and the tower became Martyrs' Tower. In October 1963, it was designated as a county-level key cultural relic protection unit by the People's Government of Anyang County. In 1970, a martyrs' pavilion was built and a memorial stele was erected. In November 1986, it was listed as a provincial-level second batch cultural relic protection unit by the People's Government of Henan Province.
