Geguan Temple

Geguan Temple is a National Key Cultural Relics Protection Unit.

Geguan Temple, located in the northwest corner of Laiyuan County, Hebei Province, has never been renovated over the past thousand years, perfectly preserving its historical appearance. It is the oldest and best-preserved earthen and wooden structure still existing in China.

Geguan Temple is commonly known as the Great Temple. According to the *Laiyuan County Annals*, it was "built during the Han Dynasty and renovated in the Tang Dynasty" and is a sacred site of the Bodhisattva Manjushri. The temple faces south and covers an area of approximately 7,000 square meters. The existing structures on the site include the Heavenly King Hall, the Manjushri Hall, and the Scripture Depository, all aligned along a central north-south axis. Flanking this axis are auxiliary buildings such as the east and west side halls and meditation rooms. Among the associated relics are an iron bell from the Liao Dynasty and two stone pagodas. The surviving halls are said to have been "repaired during the Liao Dynasty." Analysis of the architectural structure and features of the Manjushri Hall suggests that Geguan Temple was built during the Liao Dynasty. After conducting measurements and investigations, the Department of Architectural Engineering at Tsinghua University determined that the Manjushri Hall was constructed in the 16th year of the Yongli era of the Liao Dynasty (966 AD), making it over a thousand years old. The other buildings in the temple were either rebuilt or renovated during the Ming and Qing Dynasties.

The ancient pines in the temple are lush and green, and the halls are staggered in layout. The "Geguan Temple Bell Chime" is one of the twelve ancient scenic wonders of Laiyuan.
