Laiyuan Henglingzi Nature Reserve

Henglingzi Nature Reserve is located about 60 kilometers northeast of Laiyuan County, covering an area of approximately 80 square kilometers. The complex geological structure and unique environment of the reserve have created a diverse range of landform landscapes. Coupled with dense natural secondary forests and rare flora and fauna, the area boasts distinctive tourist attractions.

It's like a giant natural bonsai deep in the Yanshan Mountains: crisscrossing valleys lie among towering peaks, while natural secondary forests stretch thick and lush, with ancient trees towering above, vines hanging down, decaying logs lying across the ground, clear springs flowing, and wildflowers blooming in competition. This is truly a forest park. The favorable climate and effective forest conservation efforts have resulted in thriving natural vegetation, with coverage exceeding 90%. The scenic area bursts into flower in three seasons and remains evergreen all year round, presenting a colorful landscape in different seasons.

In early spring, as nature awakens, snow still lingers on the shaded slopes, but the peach and apricot blossoms on the sunny slopes are already in full bloom, vying in splendor. As the weather warms, lilacs and Rhododendron micranthum also compete in brilliance alongside fresh greens. In late summer and early autumn, Lespedeza bicolor, Echinops latifolius, wild chrysanthemums, Saussurea, Adenophora, and Aster altaicus among others are not to be outdone, with wildflowers of all colors blanketing the mountains. When the crisp autumn wind arrives and most flowers have faded, the maple, Abelia biflora, and birch trees display their own unique charm with fiery autumn hues. As winter approaches, the evergreen conifers stand proudly against the white snow, defying the cold and frost, appearing even more verdant and upright, bringing boundless vitality to the scenic area.

The dense natural secondary forests here provide favorable conditions for wildlife survival. According to surveys, the reserve is a primary habitat for the brown eared pheasant, a Class I protected animal in China. In addition, there are over 60 species of wildlife, including leopards, wild boars, goats, roe deer, badgers, as well as commonly seen pheasants and rabbits.

The quiet wilderness is sparsely populated, with only the murmuring streams and calls of wild animals accompanying you into this paradise on earth. In recent years, the area’s unique landscapes, intact ecosystems, pristine natural ambiance, and quaint, distinctive local customs have increasingly revealed their charm as a tourist resource. This is truly a “pure land.”
