Baoding Catholic Church

The Baoding Catholic Church is a cultural relic protection unit of Hebei Province.

The Baoding Catholic Church was originally built in the 24th year of the Guangxu reign (1901 AD) and expanded in the 3rd year of the Xuantong reign (1910 AD). It is named “Church of Saints Peter and Paul” and was constructed by French missionaries. It is one of the well-known Catholic churches in Hebei Province. Located in the city center of Baoding, it is a typical Romanesque building. To the south, it faces the Ancient Lotus Pond from afar; to the east is the famous Buddhist temple, the Great Mercy Pavilion; and to the west is the Office of the Zhili Viceroy. The church is 54.3 meters long, 17.6 meters wide, and 20.38 meters high. With its grand and majestic presence and elegant style, it can accommodate over a thousand worshippers.

Inside the church, 14 tall red pillars support the roof, and the altar features 12 stone pillars symbolizing the 12 disciples of Jesus Christ. The walls on both sides are adorned with 14 beautiful biblical paintings depicting the suffering, crucifixion, and death of Jesus Christ. The expansive dome and open space give the church a solemn and sacred atmosphere.

During the Cultural Revolution, the Catholic Church suffered severe damage and was repurposed for other uses, while religious activities were forced to cease. In 1980, the government implemented religious policies, returning the church to the diocese. After renovation, it was officially reopened for use in 1981. The church also serves as the bishop’s office for the Baoding Diocese of the Catholic Church.
