New Ways to Explore Kaohsiung’s Lotus Pond: Mini Trains & Swan Boats

In the past, visitors to Kaohsiung’s Lotus Pond mostly enjoyed the scenic views and architecture by walking or cycling. From now until April 7, the Kaohsiung City Government Tourism Bureau has introduced a stylish black retro mini train called “Cool Ro,” which runs from the Imagery Plaza near the Dragon and Tiger Towers to the large dock area opposite the Kaohsiung Products Pavilion. A one-way ticket costs NT$50, a round-trip ticket NT$80, and the total route is about 1 kilometer long.

Lotus Pond is the largest lake in downtown Kaohsiung, and the largest Confucius Temple in Taiwan is located by its shores. The pond’s water comes from the Gaoping River and has been used for irrigation since the Kangxi era of the Qing Dynasty, nurturing vast farmlands. Nowadays, the main attractions around the pond include the Spring and Autumn Pavilions, Dragon and Tiger Towers, Temple to the Goddess of Mercy, and the Five Phoenix Pagodas. The Spring and Autumn Pavilions were built in the mid-20th century, featuring a statue of the Dragon-Riding Guanyin at the front. The two pavilions are connected by a zigzag bridge, making it one of the most iconic sights at Lotus Pond.

 

During the event period, from 2:00 PM to 6:00 PM on weekdays and 10:00 AM to 6:00 PM on weekends, in addition to taking the mini train to explore Lotus Pond, visitors can also ride swan boats at the large dock area. This is perfect for families and couples. A two-person boat costs NT$200 per ride, and a four-person boat costs NT$400 per ride.
