Ruins of Dong'an Ancient City

The ruins of Dong'an Ancient City are a cultural heritage site protected at the provincial level in Shandong Province.

The ruins of Dong'an Ancient City are located in Dong'an Village, Dongli Town, Yiyuan County, Shandong Province. Established in the second year of Emperor Jing’s reign during the Western Han Dynasty (155 BC), it served as the county seat. During the Jin Dynasty, it was upgraded to Dong'an Commandery, and was abolished in the tenth year of the Daye era of the Sui Dynasty (614 AD). The *Shandong Archaeological Record* states: “The county seat of Dong'an Commandery was located about ninety li to the northwest of the district, now behind Dong'an Village…”. The old *Yishui County Annals* record: “Ninety li to the northwest of the county, five li northeast of Dongli Store, on the north bank of the Yi River lies Dong'an Village. To the northwest are two stone bridges, said to be the drawbridges of the ancient Dong'an city. This place is over twenty li from the district… This city is undoubtedly the site of Dong'an Commandery.” The site covers an area of approximately 400,000 square meters. There is a moat in the eastern part, and remains of palaces and city walls are exposed in the northern and central sections.

On December 7, 2006, the ruins of Dong'an Ancient City were designated as part of the third batch of Provincial-Level Cultural Heritage Protection Units by the People's Government of Shandong Province.
