East Huaqiangzi Street

East Huaqiangzi Street is located in the old city area of Jinan. It starts from the west entrance of Gulubazi Street in the north and ends at the north entrance of Mashijie Street in the south. To the east is Qushuiting Street, and to the west is West Huaqiangzi Street. This street was originally the outer wall of the Confucian Academy, which featured brickwork adorned with decorative patterns, commonly known as "Huaqiangzi" (patterned wall). The street got its name because it lies just outside the eastern section of this patterned wall. In the past, during the Confucius worship ceremonies, the government-run Confucian Temple was filled with incense smoke, the sounds of bells and drums, and visitors from all walks of society coming to pay their respects. Adjacent to the Confucian Temple, East Huaqiangzi Street was lined with shops of all kinds, with vendors’ calls echoing back and forth. Visitors could head south to explore Furong Street or go north along Qushuiting Street to visit Daming Lake. As a result, East Huaqiangzi Street was bustling with traffic and teeming with people, making it an extremely popular spot. Times have changed, and today, East Huaqiangzi Street boasts smooth and clean roads. The residential houses on the east side of the street have been freshly painted, with white walls and blue tiles that exude an old-world charm. Under the shade of green trees, residents gather in small groups, either playing chess or chatting, radiating a rare sense of tranquility and leisure. On the west side of the street, the wall of the Confucian Temple remains a patterned wall. Through the floral bricks, one can see the grand and magnificent architecture of the temple complex—its upturned eaves, carved rafters, green tiles, and red gables. The Pan Pond has calm, clear waters, and a five-arch white marble bridge spans gracefully over the pond. Today, East Huaqiangzi Street, along with nearby streets such as Furong Street, Qifengqiao Street, Wangfu Chiizi Street, and Qushuiting Street, forms part of the historical and cultural landscape belt of the Spring City, thanks to its unique historical and humanistic significance. It has become a beloved cultural attraction for many visitors.
