Jinan Duchen City God Temple

Jinan Duchen City God Temple is a cultural relic protection unit of Shandong Province.

Jinan Duchen City God Temple is located on the north side of Donghua Street in the old city area of Jinan, with Anci Si Street to the east, Pan Palace Street to the west, and Xueqian Street to the north. Originally, "cheng" and "huang" referred to the city wall and the moat, respectively. Later, the City God was deified as the protector deity of the city and worshipped, commonly known as the City God. It was later embraced by Taoism. Every city has its own City God Temple. As Jinan was the administrative center at the provincial, prefectural, and county levels, it had a Duchen City God Temple, a Fu City God Temple, and a County City God Temple, among which the Duchen City God Temple is the largest.

The Duchen City God Temple was first built in the second year of the Hongwu reign during the Ming Dynasty (1369). After enduring 600 years of history, the main hall ruins on the north side have been demolished and replaced with buildings. Only the mountain gate, front hall, and the collapsed theater stage remain, making it one of the few oldest surviving structures in Jinan.

Administrative Region and Population

Established in December 1962, the office was named after its jurisdiction covering the area inside the east gate of the old city. According to Jinan Municipal People’s Government Document Ji Zheng Zi [2003] No. 95 and Lixia District People’s Government Document [2003] No. 42, it was renamed Daming Lake Subdistrict Office on January 1, 2004.
