Shandong University is a comprehensive university directly under the Ministry of Education of China. With a long history, comprehensive disciplines, strong academic strength, distinctive educational features, and significant influence both domestically and internationally, it is one of the key high-level universities under the national “211 Project” and “985 Project.”

Shandong University is the originator of modern higher education in China. Its medical discipline dates back to 1864, pioneering modern medical education in China. Its main body was established as Shandong Imperial College in 1901, the second national university founded in China after the Imperial University of Peking and also the first university in China to operate according to a formal charter. Since its inception, the university has gone through several historical phases, including Shandong Imperial College, National Qingdao University, National Shandong University, Shandong University, and the new Shandong University formed by the merger of the original Shandong University, Shandong Medical University, and Shandong University of Technology. Over the past century, Shandong University has upheld the educational mission of “cultivating talents for the world” and “seeking prosperity for the nation,” adhered to the motto of “knowledge knows no bounds, and spirit is noble and vast,” and has strived diligently to pass on its legacy. It has fostered a distinctive academic culture of “pursuing truth and innovation,” and has educated over 400,000 professionals in various fields for the country and society, making important contributions to national and regional economic and social development.

As one of the first universities prioritized under the national “211 Project” and “985 Project,” Shandong University has achieved leapfrog development in recent years, reaching unprecedented heights in all its endeavors. The overall level and quality of education have significantly improved, and its international influence has grown markedly. Currently, 15 of its disciplines rank among the top 1% in the ESI global rankings in terms of academic impact and contribution (ranking eighth among domestic universities), and it has signed inter-university cooperation agreements with nearly 170 institutions in over 30 countries and regions.

The university is large in scale and strong in strength. It covers a total area of more than 8,000 acres (including approximately 3,000 acres at the Qingdao campus), forming an educational framework of one university across three locations (Jinan, Qingdao, and Weihai) and eight campuses (Jinan Central Campus, Hongjialou Campus, Baotuquan Campus, Qianfoshan Campus, Software Park Campus, Xinglongshan Campus, as well as Qingdao Campus and Weihai Campus). It currently has four affiliated hospitals, three non-affiliated affiliated hospitals, and 11 teaching and internship hospitals. There are 7,759 faculty and staff members (excluding those at affiliated hospitals). The total number of full-time students reaches 60,000, including 40,822 undergraduates, 17,984 postgraduates, and 3,407 international students. The university boasts a distinguished faculty, including 1,082 professors and 897 doctoral supervisors. Among them, Nobel Physics Laureate Peter Grünberg serves as a Distinguished Professor, and Professor Mo Yan, a postgraduate supervisor, won the 2012 Nobel Prize in Literature. The university currently has 8 academicians from the Chinese Academy of Sciences and the Chinese Academy of Engineering, 48 dual-appointed academicians, 10 lifelong professors, and 16 first-class professors in humanities and social sciences. There are 22 national “Thousand Talents Plan” Distinguished Professors, 18 “Young Thousand Talents Plan” scholars, 7 members of the Academic Degree Committee of the State Council’s discipline evaluation groups, 28 individuals selected for the National “Ten Thousand Talents Program,” 46 Distinguished Professors and Lecture Professors under the Ministry of Education’s “Changjiang Scholars Program” and 1 selected for the Young Scholars Program, 38 recipients of the National Science Fund for Distinguished Young Scholars, 59 Taishan Scholars Distinguished Experts of Shandong Province, 31 Taishan Scholars Overseas Distinguished Experts, and 6 selected for the Taishan Scholars Climbing Program.

The university possesses excellent teaching and research platforms, including 2 first-level national key disciplines (covering 8 second-level disciplines), 14 second-level national key disciplines, 3 second-level national key cultivated disciplines, and 70 provincial key disciplines, spanning the four major academic fields of humanities, science, engineering, and medicine, achieving coordinated development across all disciplines. It also has 7 national-level scientific research platforms, including national key laboratories, national engineering technology research centers, national engineering laboratories, and national engineering technology promotion centers, 6 projects under the national “111 Innovation Talent Introduction Plan,” 6 national-level talent training bases, 4 key research bases in humanities and social sciences under the Ministry of Education, 21 key laboratories and engineering technology research centers under the Ministry of Education and the Ministry of Health, as well as a large number of provincial-level key laboratories and engineering technology research centers.

Shandong University is currently one of the universities in China with the most comprehensive range of disciplines and is representative among comprehensive universities. Its undergraduate and postgraduate education spans 12 major academic disciplines: philosophy, economics, law, education, literature, history, science, engineering, agriculture, medicine, management, and art. It offers 41 first-level doctoral degree authorization disciplines, 56 first-level master's degree authorization disciplines, 3 professional doctoral degree programs, 27 professional master's degree programs, 117 undergraduate majors, and 41 postdoctoral research stations, forming a complete, robust, and distinctive talent cultivation system. In the course of its historical development, Shandong University has established its own disciplinary strengths and characteristics. Especially during its glorious periods in Qingdao in the 1930s and 1950s, it laid the academic foundation of “excellence in humanities and history,” nurturing a group of highly reputed humanities scholars both in China and abroad, as well as influential academic platforms such as the journal Wen Shi Zhe (Literature, History, and Philosophy). In August 2015, the university successfully hosted the 22nd International Congress of Historical Sciences, known as the “Olympics of History.” This marked the first time the congress, which was founded 115 years ago, was held in a country in Asia, Africa, or Latin America, setting records for the highest number of registered participating countries, the number of historians from developing countries, and the number of young scholars attending. Since the merger of the three universities in the late 1990s, newly developed disciplines such as financial mathematics, crystal materials, condensed matter physics, colloid and interface chemistry, microbiology, mechanical engineering, materials science, cardiovascular and cerebrovascular function repair, new drug manufacturing, and classical Chinese philosophy have all reached first-class levels domestically, with some directions and fields attaining world-class standards.
