Baotu Spring Jinan Massacre Memorial Hall

The “Jinan Massacre Memorial Hall” is located in the northeast corner of Baotu Spring. Right at the entrance stands a white marble memorial archway with the inscription “A Model for Future Generations” on its horizontal beam, which was designed and carved based on Han Dynasty statues.

In May 1928, the militarist Japanese government, under the pretext of protecting its nationals, sent troops into Jinan. Blood was shed in Lixia, and the Spring City suffered devastation. On the third day, Cai Gongshi, then the Commissioner for Sino-Japanese Affairs in Shandong, died while trying to mediate the crisis. On the eleventh day, the entire city fell. Within ten days, 6,123 soldiers and civilians in Jinan were killed, 1,770 were injured, and property losses amounted to tens of millions. When news of the atrocities spread, the whole world was outraged. Chen Jiageng, an overseas Chinese from Nanyang, raised funds to cast a bronze statue of Martyr Cai Gongshi to honor his integrity. In 2006, the statue of Cai Gongshi was returned to the site of his martyrdom. In response to the public’s reverence, a memorial hall was specially built by Baotu Spring, where the bronze statue of Cai Gongshi is enshrined for people to pay their respects. A memorial bell was also cast to remind our people not to forget this national humiliation.

Baotu Spring Subdistrict: The Baotu Spring Subdistrict Office is located in the city center. It was established in December 1962 and is named after the famous Baotu Spring within its jurisdiction. It stretches from Huan Cheng Park in the north to the Party School of the Municipal Committee, the Nanhao Guesthouse, and Shandong Building in the south; from Chaoshan Street and Shungeng Road in the east to Nanxin Street, connecting with the central urban area in the west. It covers a total area of 1.64 square kilometers, governs 4 community neighborhood committees, has 10,385 households, and a total population of 42,631, with a birth rate of 4.8‰ and a natural growth rate of 0.51‰. There are over 600 institutions stationed here, including central, provincial, and municipal government offices, colleges and universities, and enterprises.
