Former Residence of Chen Mian, the Imperial Examination Top Scorer

The Former Residence of Chen Mian, the Imperial Examination Top Scorer, is a cultural heritage site protected at the provincial level in Shandong Province.

The Former Residence of Chen Mian, the Imperial Examination Top Scorer, is located in Quancheng Road Subdistrict, Lixia District, Jinan. It dates back to the Qing Dynasty. In 2013, it was designated as part of the fourth batch of provincial-level cultural heritage sites by the People's Government of Shandong Province.

The Former Residence of Chen Mian, the Imperial Examination Top Scorer, is located on the north side of Bianzhi Lane in old Jinan. Only two courtyards remain: those at No. 9 and No. 11 Bianzhi Lane, and each courtyard has only two courtyards left. The imperial plaque inscribed with “Top Scorer in the Imperial Examination,” bestowed by Emperor Guangxu, was once hung above the gate of No. 9 courtyard. Originally known as the Chen Family Compound, it came to be called the “Top Scorer’s Residence” after its owner, Chen Mian, earned the title of top scorer during the Guangxu reign of the late Qing Dynasty.

Covering a total area of 1.27 square kilometers, it borders Daming Lake to the north, Baotu Spring to the west, Quancheng Square to the south, and is traversed by the bustling Quancheng Road. It serves as the city’s commercial and tourism hub, as well as the location of the Shandong Provincial People's Government. The subdistrict governs seven community neighborhood committees, with a total population of 16,618, comprising 6,525 households, and a birth rate of 6.28‰.
