Introduction:

The Daoguang Ancient Well is situated beside Shishiba Slope in Houwan Village, Sanjiang Town. It has a circular well curb made of breccia rock, which is 51 cm tall and 81.5 cm in diameter. Beneath the well curb is a square well platform with a water runoff groove. One side of the well curb is inscribed with four characters “道光戊子” (Daoguang Wuzi), arranged in a double-line square seal format, representing the year 1828. The well covers an area of 2.72 square meters.

The water from the Daoguang Ancient Well is clear, sweet, and mellow, making it especially suitable for brewing liquor and making tofu. It is highly favored by villagers and nearby residents. During a cleaning in the early years of the Republic of China, bricks engraved with the characters “继哲继亮” (Jizhe Jiliang) were discovered at the bottom of the well, indicating that it had been maintained and in use since the Qianlong period of the Qing Dynasty (1730–1795).
