Description:

Putuo Pagoda is located within the bamboo grove of a villager’s home in Leijia Village, Yuantang, Xingshe Village, Gangshang Town.

The pagoda faces east and has an octagonal floor plan, covering an area of 1.48 square meters. It is a seven-story pavilion-style structure with a half-story base, seven stories of the main body (including seven eaves), plus a pagoda top and a gourd-shaped finial. Each story of the pagoda is carved from a single piece of red sandstone. The main body of each level features inscriptions of Buddha names or niches, while the plain eaves have a distinctive feature: a horseshoe-shaped recess carved in the center of each of the eight upward-facing sides. The base is inscribed with “Introduction to Songshan Rock Pagoda,” which details the construction process of the pagoda and the reason for its relocation.

Putuo Pagoda is a valuable physical artifact for studying Buddhism, folk customs, and pagoda craftsmanship during the mid-to-late Ming Dynasty.
