Moon Pond Ancient Well

The Moon Pond Ancient Well is a cultural relic protection unit of Nanchang County.

The “Moon Pond Ancient Well,” originally named the “Wanli Ancient Well,” is located to the south of Moon Pond Village in Gangshang Town. The western side of the well’s coping stone is inscribed with the characters “Wanli Gui □□□□ Dan,” indicating that the well was first dug during the Wanli era of the Ming Dynasty. On the northeastern side of the coping stone, there is an engraved clerical script inscription reading “Repaired in the Year of Renchen, Guangxu”; on the southeastern side, another clerical script engraving reads “Supervised and repaired in the first year of the Republic of China, by Yin San”; and on the eastern side, there is also an inscription reading “Minor repairs in 1968.”

The well’s coping stone is carved from pinkish-yellow sandstone. Due to long-term use, it is heavily worn, with most sections being less than 45 centimeters high. The well is approximately 5 meters deep, still contains water, but is no longer in use.

The ancient well is situated in an open area to the south of Moon Pond Village in Gangshang Town, with the ancient “Moon Pond” to its north, behind which lies the village itself. About 80 meters to the west is the Wenhou Expressway. Moon Pond Village has developed the “Moon Pond Ancient Well” and its surrounding area into a leisure space.

On July 20, 2000, the Nanchang County People's Government listed it as part of the second batch of Nanchang County Cultural Relic Protection Units.

Gangshang Town: Located south of Nanchang City, the provincial capital, Gangshang Town in Nanchang County borders Liantang Town (where the county seat is located) to the north, neighbors the Xiangtang Provincial Development Zone to the east, and lies beside the golden waterway of the Gan River to the west.
