Cai Family Tongfeng Mansion

Cai Family Tongfeng Mansion is a cultural heritage site protected by Nanchang County.

Cai Family Tongfeng Mansion is located in the northwest of Caijia Natural Village, Nanjie Village, Sanjiang Town, Nanchang County. It was built by brothers Cai Darui and Cai Guorui in the late Qing Dynasty and took over 20 years to complete. The two buildings share a connected wall, aligned along a north-south longitudinal axis, and are constructed of brick and wood. Both have their main gates on the east side, adorned with carved stone lintels above the doors. The rear section (northern section), built by younger brother Cai Guorui, has a stone plaque inscribed with “Tongfeng Mansion” embedded in its east gate. Both structures feature grayish-blue brick walls, with red sandstone rib stones at the base, and hipped-gable roofs. The interiors consist of traditional post-and-lintel wooden frameworks on both floors.

The columns in the rear section are rare square-shaped pillars, resting on carved square stone bases (with slightly chiseled octagonal corners at the four edges). The floral carvings between the columns are exquisitely detailed, and the decorative lattice windows are largely well-preserved. A diamond-shaped stone carving is also embedded in the southern wall of the rear section. It holds reference value for the study of landlord manor economies during the mid-Qing Dynasty.

Cai Family Tongfeng Mansion is surrounded by residential houses to the east, south, and west. About 50 meters to the southwest are the Nanchang County cultural heritage sites “Cai Family Iron Tile House” and “Xianda Ancestral Hall,” as well as a newly built temple. Approximately 300 meters further west lies the Nanchang City cultural heritage site “Pearl Pagoda.” About 1,000 meters to the east of the village runs the Xiang-Le Railway.

On May 7, 2010, the People’s Government of Nanchang County designated it as a cultural heritage site under the fifth batch of Nanchang County protections.
