Houwan Ancient Well

The Houwan Ancient Well is a cultural relic protection unit of Nanchang City.

The "Houwan Ancient Well" is located near Shoushiba Slope in Houwan Village, Sanjiang Town, Nanchang County.

The "Houwan Village" was originally called "Houwan Village." The Houwan Ancient Well is situated to the southeast of the village, with the Zonggan Weir of a tributary of the Fu River to the east, Liyutang Pond in front of the village to the west, and the residences of Houwan villagers to the north. The Liyutang Pond and the large green area to its south have now been combined and turned into "Wanfang Garden." Inside Wanfang Garden, there is a bronze statue of Di Gong (an ancestor of the Wan family) and the Wanfang Pavilion. In addition, Houwan Village also features the Double Virtue Memorial Archway, the Gate of Bida, the Golden List Flagstone, Shiba Slope, as well as clusters of ancient Ming and Qing dynasty architecture.

The "Houwan Ancient Well" features a circular well curb carved from a single piece of medium-coarse conglomerate rock, standing 51 centimeters high with an outer diameter of 81.5 centimeters. On one side of the well curb, the four characters "Daoguang Wuzi" (meaning the year 1828) are inscribed in intaglio, arranged in a double-row square seal formation. Below the well curb lies a square well platform with a water runoff groove. The well shaft is square, and its walls are built with rectangular fine-grained conglomerate stone slabs. The well water is clear, sweet, and mellow, making it especially suitable for brewing liquor and making tofu, which is highly favored by villagers and nearby residents. During a cleaning in the early years of the Republic of China, a brick inscribed with the characters "Jizhe Jiliang" was found at the bottom of the well, proving that it had been maintained and in use since the Qianlong period of the Qing Dynasty (1730–1795).

On February 25, 1996, the Nanchang Municipal People's Government listed it as part of the second batch of Nanchang Municipal Cultural Relic Protection Units.
