Shuangjie Archway

The Shuangjie Archway is a cultural relic protection unit of Nanchang City.

The “Shuangjie Archway” is located in the central front part of Houwan Village, Sanjiang Town. Constructed in the year of Bingwu during the Guangxu reign of the Qing Dynasty (1906), it faces south with its back to the connected archway residence, covering an area of 52.5 square meters.

The archway is made of granite, featuring four pillars, three bays, and five stories. The main roof has been lost, while the secondary and side roofs are supported by double stone arches. The ridges of the side roofs are adorned with fish-dragon ornaments. The two-tier stone lintels between the central and side pillars are intricately carved with figures and stories, vividly rendered. Patterned floral panels are inlaid between the lintels.

The upper lintel of the main roof is inscribed with the characters “Imperial Edict,” while the lower lintel bears the four characters “Pure Hearts and Clear Deeds.” The lower crossbeam is engraved with eighteen characters: “The Chastity and Filial Piety Archway of Madam Liu, Wife of Wan Qipei, and Madam Wang, Wife of Wan Qikui.” The central pillars are inscribed with a couplet: “Loyal hearts together receive the honor of imperial recognition; steadfast integrity jointly wins the glory of commemoration.” The side pillars bear another couplet: “Their vows unswerving, their names recorded in history as a tale of dual chastity; their reputations immortal, their virtuous conduct honored by the imperial court.”

According to the “Biographies of Chaste and Heroic Women” in the Thirteenth Revised Genealogy of the Wan Clan: Among those honored, one is Madam Liu, who was granted the title of Grand Madam due to her husband’s nephew, Zhao Cui, attaining an official position. The other is Madam Wang, who was granted the title of Lady due to her husband’s nephew, Qixing, becoming an official. Both were honored in the year of Bingwu during the Guangxu reign (1906 AD) for their chastity and filial piety, with the archway erected in their village and their names also listed on the collective Chastity and Filial Piety Archway in Fengcheng County.

On December 29, 2011, the Nanchang Municipal People's Government listed it as part of the fourth batch of Nanchang Cultural Relic Protection Units.
