Lion Cave

Jiujiang Lion Cave is located at the foot of Lion Mountain in Shizi Township, Jiujiang County. It derives its name from being hidden within the rocky cliffs of Lion Mountain on the western foothills of Mount Lu, and also because the mountain resembles a giant lion lying down. The cave features winding passages, complex structures, and a dazzling array of formations.

The cave has a total tour route of nearly 500 meters and officially opened to visitors in 1982. It covers a total area of 1,300 square meters and consists of seven chambers and nearly forty scenic spots, all interconnected. These include the Front Gate Hall, Reception Hall, Celebration Hall, Jade Curtain Hall, Purple Bamboo Hall, Green Lotus Hall, and Key Storage Hall. The main hall is 19 meters high and 11 meters wide, presenting a magnificent sight. The cave’s stalactites and stalagmites are crystal-clear and strikingly colorful, forming various shapes of birds, beasts, bamboo, trees—as well as depictions of peacocks, stone swans, stone lions, stone elephants, stone monkeys, stone turtles, stone crocodiles, stone mermaids, stone guardians, stone drums, stone cages, stone towers, stone forests, stone lotuses, stone chrysanthemums, along with stone pillars, stone railings, stone canopies, stone curtains, stone springs, and other representations of birds, beasts, flowers, grasses, bamboos, and trees. Together, they create a marvelous animal and plant world that is incredibly lifelike and vibrant.

Lion Cave is situated on the western foothills of Mount Lu, inside the rocky cliffs of Lion Mountain, four kilometers west of Jiujiang County. It gets its name from the mountain’s resemblance to a reclining male lion. The scenic area covers 100 acres, with a total investment of 2.8 million yuan. Since its opening in 1980, it has received nearly 50,000 domestic and international visitors annually.

The karst cave contains numerous realistic rock formations in ever-changing shapes, creating a dynamic and fascinating experience as you move through it. The cave is divided into seven scenic chambers and features over 40 attractions along a tour route of more than 500 meters. Inside, the arrangements of stone stalagmites, stalactites, stone peaks, and stone bamboos are ingeniously crafted; stone towers and stone trees are majestic; stone waterfalls and curtains are grand and imposing; stone chrysanthemums and lotuses seem to exude fragrance; stone birds and beasts are strikingly lifelike, almost recreating legendary characters from Journey to the West. It is hailed as the foremost karst cave wonder along the Beijing-Kowloon Railway.
