Attraction Introduction

Immortal's Cave is one of the famous attractions on Mount Lu, located beneath "Buddha's Hand Rock" at the southern end of the Beautiful Valley. By the Qing Dynasty, Buddha's Hand Rock had become a sacred Taoist site and was renamed Immortal's Cave. The cave is about 10 meters in both height and depth, and in its secluded depths, a clear spring drips down, known as "One Drop Spring." It is said that this spring has been dripping for over a thousand years without ever drying up. Below the spring is a pool surrounded by stone railings. The cave walls feature inscriptions such as "Jade Liquid of the Cave Heaven." In the center of the cave, the "Chunyang Hall" houses a stone statue of Lü Dongbin, the sword immortal among the Eight Immortals, who is said to have attained enlightenment here. Whenever the area is enveloped in mist, it adds to the ethereal atmosphere. Mao Zedong’s famous lines, “Heaven created this immortal’s cave, boundless beauty lies atop the perilous peak,” have made this site world-renowned, turning it into a must-visit destination for all travelers to Mount Lu.

On the left side of the cave is a moon gate built of stone, with the three large characters "Immortal's Cave" carved above the lintel. Inside the moon gate stands a huge, protruding rock shaped like a toad, known as "Toad Stone," with a sturdy pine tree growing upright from the rock, called "Stone Pine." The stone bears the cliff inscriptions "Survey the Flying Clouds" and "Suddenly Enlightened." Beneath the rock, clouds swirl by, creating a fairy-tale-like scene. To the right of the cave, beneath the Guanmiao Pavilion, there is an even larger freestanding rock called "Immortal-Wandering Stone," which juts out over a bottomless abyss, offering spectacular and thrilling views. From here, one can take in the entire view of the Beautiful Valley. Beside the Immortal-Wandering Stone is a bamboo grove. The three characters "Immortal-Wandering Stone" and the poem inscribed on the nearby cliff, “No immortal abode found in the bamboo grove, red cliffs hang with broken stones, yet traces of wanderers remain,” were written by Qian Quanzhi of Dongguan in the seventh year of the Jiajing reign of the Ming Dynasty (1528).

2. In case of sudden temperature drops, this is also one of the best places to observe the sea of clouds on Mount Lu.
