Lushan's Ruyin Lake

Ruyin Lake was formed by damming the valley entrance at the upper end of Tianqiao in the deep depression of West Valley. Integrated with the Flower Path, the lake forms an elegant and serene scenic spot. Constructed in 1961, the lake covers an area of 110,000 square meters with a water storage capacity of 100 cubic meters. It is both vast and magnificent, yet retains delicate beauty. The graceful curves of the lakeshore and the lake’s surface, which resembles a charming violin, along with the ancient inscription of the two characters “Rú Qín” (like a lute) on a rock by the lake, create a subtle yet profound combination—thus the name Ruyin Lake. Half of the lake lies near the Flower Path Garden, hence it is also called “Flower Path Lake.” As it is situated in West Valley, it is also known as “West Lake.”

Ruyin Lake is both vast and magnificent, yet retains delicate beauty. The graceful curves of the lakeshore and the lake’s surface, which resembles a charming violin, along with the ancient inscription of the two characters “Rú Qín” on a nearby rock, inspired its name. Half of the lake lies near the Flower Path Garden, hence it is also called Flower Path Lake. A winding bridge leads to the lake’s central island. The garden is filled with blooming flowers, hidden paths, and picturesque views of the lake and surrounding mountains.

The Flower Path is said to be the place where Tang Dynasty poet Bai Juyi wrote his poem “Peach Blossoms in Dalin Temple.” The garden features a “Bai Juyi Thatched Cottage Exhibition Room.” A stone statue of Bai Juyi stands by the lake. In Flower Path Pavilion, the two characters “花径” (Flower Path) are inscribed on a horizontal stone, believed to be written by Bai Juyi himself.

Legend has it that when Bai Juyi was demoted and served as Sima (a government official) in Jiangzhou (present-day Jiujiang), he visited Lushan. It was late spring at the time, and Bai was moved to see peach blossoms still in bloom here while they had already faded elsewhere. As a result, the area is also called “Bai Sima’s Flower Path,” and “Jingbai Pavilion” was built there.
