Wenshu Terrace on Mount Lu

Wenshu Terrace leans against the western side of Tianchi Mountain and is built along the edge of a ravine. Its top has a semi-circular flat surface, with stone steps leading up on the left side and a stone railing along the terrace. Below, there are five original stone chambers constructed with a mix of stone, wood, and cement. It is said that later generations built the terrace in tribute to the legend of someone inserting their hands into the rock to create a pool, then erecting the platform to enshrine the statue of “Manjushri Bodhisattva.” Another legend says that Manjushri, riding a blue lion, descended from the sky and was so amazed by the mountain’s beauty that he accidentally fell, leaving an imprint of his hip that created a semi-circular mark on the ground. He then faced the sky to worship the sun. Later generations built a stone terrace around the imprint, which is why it is also called the Sun-Worshipping Terrace.

Wenshu Terrace was first built during the Eastern Jin Dynasty and has been destroyed and rebuilt many times since. Below the terrace, there is a protruding rock resembling a horn that seems to reach into the sky, called “Sky-Reaching Rock.” The surroundings of Wenshu Terrace are elegant, with pleasant shade that inspires the feeling that “one hasn’t truly experienced this scenic wonder without visiting this terrace.” Upon ascending to the top, you’ll see towering peaks, lush fields, distant green mountains, and vast flatlands. Looking up, you’ll enjoy the graceful sight of white clouds against the blue sky; looking down, you’ll be captivated by the deep serenity of emerald valleys and clear streams. This spot is not only a great place to view sea of clouds but also an ideal location where the Buddha's light might occasionally appear.
