Wulu Villa

“Wulu” is another clear and expansive historical footprint among the villas of Mount Lu. Built by the Chinese but with strong European characteristics, it maintains a cohesive architectural style without any overly ornate or hard-to-understand details—this is the only villa of its kind on Mount Lu.

Wulu is situated at No. 742 Dalin Road on Mount Lu. This was where Wu Dingchang lived during the 1930s and 1940s. Walking south along the main road from Flower Path, you can see this two-story stone castle-style villa on the west side of the road. It stands atop the mountain ridge, facing east, at an elevation of about 1,090 meters. To the west, at the foot of the ridge, lies the famously scenic Splendid Valley.

Wu Dingchang (1884–1950), courtesy name Daquan, pen name Qianxi, was originally from Wuxing, Zhejiang (now Wuxing District, Huzhou City, Zhejiang Province). He was born in 1884 in Huayang County, Sichuan. A late-Qing scholar, he later served as the general manager of the Ta Kung Pao after the founding of the Republic of China, as well as the head of both the Bank of China and the Bank of Communications, and was a renowned industrialist. From 1938 to 1945, he served as the Chairman of Guizhou Province and Deputy Director of the Yunnan-Guizhou Pacification Office.

Wu Dingchang was born into an official family and studied at the Zunjing Academy in Chengdu in his early years.
