Lushan Anti-Japanese War Martyrs Memorial
The Lushan Anti-Japanese War Martyrs Memorial is a cultural relic protection unit of Jiangxi Province.
The Lushan Anti-Japanese War Martyrs Memorial is located in the Xiaotianchi Scenic Area of Mount Lu within the Mount Lu Scenic Area, Lushan City, Jiujiang.
1946
In 1945, Japan surrendered in August, and in late September 1945, the 99th Army of the Army arrived in Jiujiang to accept the surrender and take over the defense duties from the New 3rd Army. From April to September 1946, General Liang Hanming ordered Japanese prisoners of war to build the 99th Army Anti-Japanese War Martyrs Memorial on Mount Lu’s Xiaotianchi, both to avenge the national humiliation and to make the prisoners reflect on and atone for their crimes.
The originally built “99th Army Anti-Japanese War Martyrs Memorial” had a triangular pyramid-shaped main body, symbolizing —, with a top resembling a sword piercing the sky. Liang Hanming, the then commander of the 99th Army of the National Revolutionary Army who oversaw the memorial’s construction, composed a couplet for it: “Amid the whistling wind at the Yishui River, we go to slay the dragon; under the cold moon over Mount Lu, we return riding a crane.”
After 1949, the stone archway, the memorial, and the Martyrs’ Spirit Terrace complex were preserved intact. However, the original inscription on the memorial, “99th Army Anti-Japanese War Martyrs Memorial,” was replaced with “Revolutionary Martyrs Monument.” During the Cultural Revolution, the memorial was demolished; the archway was toppled, which was very regrettable. After the Cultural Revolution ended, the memorial was re-erected; the “Martyrs’ Spirit Terrace” was renamed “River-Watching Pavilion.”
In 2007, Mount Lu built the “Lushan Anti-Japanese War Memorial” on the former site of the “99th Army Anti-Japanese War Martyrs Memorial” in the Xiaotianchi Scenic Area.
At the entrance to the memorial park stands a granite double-pillar single-bay towering stone archway. It was damaged during the Cultural Revolution and restored in the 1980s. In front of the pillars is an inscribed couplet: “The spirits return to Mount Lu, the aura fills Xiaotianchi,” with the horizontal inscription “Eternal Heroism.” On the back is a couplet written by then 99th Army Commander Liang Hanming: “The righteousness of heaven and earth, the stars shine upon mankind,” with the horizontal inscription “Defending the Nation and Protecting the People.”
Through this stone archway, one can see the soaring Lushan Anti-Japanese War Memorial.
Protected area: extending 30 meters outward from the monument as the boundary. Area: 2,721 square meters.
