Laozi Reading Scriptures is located at the northern entrance of Mount Sanqing, at an altitude of 1,100 meters. Beside the peak is a broken rock resembling a “thatched hut,” evoking the simple life of “building a house with thatch and fencing with bamboo.”

The entire mountain peak resembles an old Taoist priest without a crown or tied hair, bowing his body facing the cliff, intently as if reading scriptures. At sunrise every day, the sun rises from beneath the waist of the peak, making Laozi Reading Scriptures appear even more majestic and towering. On moonlit nights, the peak is bathed in moonlight, as if tirelessly continuing to read the scriptures.

Lao Dan, surname Li, given name Er, courtesy name Boyang. “Dan” was his posthumous title. He was from Ku County in the State of Chu during the Spring and Autumn period (present-day east of Luyi County, Henan Province). His birth and death years are unknown. He once served as the Historian of the Zhou Dynasty’s Repository of Archives, later as the Grand Historian under the Pillar, well-versed in the changes of ancient and modern times. In his later years, he lived in seclusion in Pei, farming and teaching disciples, lecturing on virtue and the Dao. Later, he traveled west into the Central Plains and died in Qin while visiting.

After the Warring States period, his sayings spread widely.
