Google has announced that Yushan, celebrated as a spiritual symbol of Taiwan, is now officially on Google Street View. People across the globe can now admire the breathtaking sights of Yushan, Yushan North Peak, and Yushan Main Peak, all towering at 3,952 meters, through the Google Street View service. To bring the beauty of the island even closer, Google Street View has also integrated Virtual Reality (VR) technology, allowing users to explore iconic spots like Taiwan’s highest peak immersively using just a smartphone paired with Google Cardboard. Additionally, the "Street View Trekker Loan Program" has yielded impressive results since its launch, successfully assisting multiple third-party partners in promoting Taiwan’s hidden gems and tourist routes to the world.

In addition to being the foremost of Taiwan’s Five Great Mountains and the King of the Hundred Mountains, Yushan was once renamed “New High Mountain” by the Japanese government during the colonial period due to its elevation surpassing that of Japan’s Mount Fuji. It ranked as the tallest peak in Northeast Asia. The Yushan massif features rugged, towering peaks with a grand and imposing presence, unmatched in scale. Its varied climate fosters rich biodiversity, nurturing many precious ecological treasures unique to Taiwan. Starting in September 2015, the Google Street View team ventured deep into Yushan twice, overcoming extreme weather conditions, treacherous terrain, and the physical limits of the operators. Using the Street View Trekker’s 360-degree imaging technology, they captured the sweeping landscapes of Yushan, Yushan North Peak, and the Yuanfeng Mountain Hut. Moving forward, users can visit Yushan online via their connected devices—not only to witness the grandeur of Taiwan’s highest peak but also to scout terrain and routes in advance to ensure safer climbing plans. By making these Street View images available, Google also hopes to promote educational awareness, helping more people learn about Yushan and reducing the potential damage to this unique landscape from tourism, thereby preserving its majestic beauty for generations to come.

To present an even more immersive depiction of Taiwan’s distinctive terrains, Google Street View has also incorporated cutting-edge virtual reality technology. With just a smartphone and Google Cardboard, users can explore Taiwan’s beauty up close and personal. To date, Google Street View has covered the entire island of Taiwan, as well as outlying islands including Kinmen, Matsu, Penghu, Little Liuqiu, Green Island, and Orchid Island, with the total number of indoor and outdoor locations exceeding 600.
