Taiwan’s highest peak — Yushan, and Japan’s highest mountain — Mount Fuji, officially signed a cooperation agreement on February 7 in Fujikawaguchiko City, Yamanashi Prefecture, Japan, establishing them as “Sister Mountains.”

Standing at 3,952 meters, Yushan is the tallest mountain in Taiwan. During the signing ceremony, Shōji Kiyokazu, Vice President of the Japan Mount Fuji Association, stated that the establishment of a friendship mountain relationship holds great significance for deepening exchanges between Taiwan and Japan, and he also looks forward to enhancing Taiwanese people’s fondness for Japanese things and culture. He Chong-da, Chairman of the Republic of China Mountain Association, also said that he had climbed to the summit of Mount Fuji two and a half years ago and was full of praise for the beautiful mountain scenery. After the signing of the "Friendship Mountain Cooperation Agreement," the Japanese Mount Fuji Association is also expected to initiate its first exchange starting in March. A delegation is scheduled to visit Taiwan from March 2 to 5 to explore Yushan and meet with Taiwan's mountain associations. Lin Cheh-chuan, head of the guide group at the Republic of China Mountain Association, stated that the Japanese Mount Fuji Association will take a walk around the Tatachia area during their visit.
