Fang Zhimin's Simple Life Memorial Park
Fang Zhimin's Simple Life Memorial Park is a classic red tourism attraction.
Huaiyu Mountain Fang Zhimin's Simple Life Memorial Park and Fang Zhimin Museum.
The Simple Life Memorial Park centers around the Monument to Simplicity and covers an area of 10 acres. There are 36 steps leading up to the monument, symbolizing the legendary, heroic, and tragic short life of Fang Zhimin (who passed away at the age of 36). The Monument to Simplicity project was fully completed on August 25, 2005, with a total investment of 2.2 million yuan.
The Monument to Simplicity is built on a small hill in the Yufeng Basin of Huaiyu Mountain, where Fang Zhimin fought bravely. It stands against the main peak of Huaiyu Mountain, Yungai Peak. The monument is constructed from natural granite and consists of two parts: a stone stele inscribed with text, and a sculpture of Fang Zhimin’s portrait (the stele measures 10m wide × 4m high × 3.4m thick; the portrait measures 4m wide × 5m high × 4m thick). The front of the stele is engraved with Fang Zhimin’s handwritten text of his essay “The Simple Life,” while the back features carvings depicting Fang Zhimin’s life and the 20 days he spent fighting heroically on Huaiyu Mountain.
Huaiyu Mountain is where Fang Zhimin fought. It features the Simple Life Memorial Park, Panlonggang, Huaiyu Academy, Gaozhushan, and over ten other cultural relics and revolutionary sites. The mountain is covered with century-old pines and lush greenery, offering a tranquil environment. Facing the Sanqingshan Mountain, it serves as a national patriotic education base. Legend has it that “the Heavenly Emperor left jade here, hidden by the mountain god,” making it a historically significant site for Buddhism and Confucianism.
In 1935, Fang Zhimin led the Northern Expeditionary Advance Detachment in a fierce battle here and was unfortunately captured. In 1985, the “Fang Zhimin Martyrs’ Memorial Pavilion” was built on Gaozhushan, and in 2005, the “Monument to Simplicity” and the “Exhibition Hall of Fang Zhimin’s Simple Life” were erected in front of Yungai Peak. The scenic area spans approximately 80 square kilometers, featuring both granite mountain landscapes and revolutionary memorial sites. It is also the largest high-altitude summer resort in East China. Green ecology, ancient culture, and red heritage are the defining features of the park. On the mountain, there remain 24 historic scenes such as Three Qing Dynasties’ Sunrise, Jade Peak Piercing the Sky, Lingyan Waterfall, and Huishan Night Candle, along with cliff inscriptions such as “Panlong Ridge” and “Green Mountains and Clear Waters” handwritten by Zhu Xi, and relics like the plaque of “Huaiyu Academy.”
