The One-Line Sky of Sanqingshan (One-Line Gorge)

The One-Line Sky of Sanqingshan is situated on the stone stairway trail in the Nanshuiyuan Scenic Area, where the path turns toward Yutai (east). The trail ascends a steep slope, enclosed by towering cliffs on either side, forming a narrow gap of less than one meter in width. The sloping passage extends 120 meters in length and reaches a height of approximately 100 meters. At its narrowest section, the crevice is so slim that only a single person can squeeze through. As visitors look up here, they can see only a sliver of blue sky — hence the name “One-Line Sky.” Also known as “One-Line Bond,” it subtly alludes to the traditional saying, “A thread of fate ties lovers across thousands of miles.” In April 2001, the passage was renovated and realigned, and the staircase was rebuilt with exactly 299 steps, which phonetically implies “love for a long, long time (爱久久).” Along the sides, five themed platforms were constructed: Longing, Understanding, Falling in Love, True Love, and Unity, symbolizing the progressive elevation of love. Additionally, nine small steps were built at the top, representing everlasting love and the idea that true lovers will eventually be united. Reaching the “Nine-Nine Platform” signifies eternal love, lasting happiness, and a blissful union.

The One-Line Sky is located at the turning point of the stone stairway in the Nanshuiyuan Scenic Area. The path climbs a steep slope, enclosed by high cliffs on both sides, reaching about 100 meters in height. The sloped passage is 120 meters long with a width of less than one meter at its narrowest point, where only one person can pass through. Looking upward, visitors can see just a thin strip of blue sky, which is why it’s called the One-Line Sky. It also carries the symbolic meaning of “a thread of fate tying lovers across a thousand miles.” The staircase consists of 299 steps, phonetically representing “love for a long, long time (爱久久).” There are also many love locks along the sides, symbolizing vows and affection. Moreover, the stairs of the One-Line Sky are very steep, so visitors should pay extra attention to safety while climbing.
