Yushan City Wall

Yushan City Wall is a cultural heritage site protected at the provincial level in Jiangxi Province.

A long section of the city wall from the Jiajing era of the Ming Dynasty is preserved in the southeast of Yushan County. The ancient wall is built from red stone blocks, with moss growing in some shaded areas and very thick trees sprouting from the crevices in the wall.

The wall follows the course of a river, with residential areas inside and local vegetable plots outside. Some vegetables are even planted on top of the wall. I originally thought only a small section of Yushan’s ancient city wall had been preserved, but it turned out to stretch over two or three hundred meters without an end in sight. Later, when I asked the manager in the hotel lobby, I learned that the ancient wall extends all the way from the east to the south of the city. Yushan County’s ancient city wall is located in the southeast of the county town, on the north bank of the Bingxi River, built along the river, and is a provincial-level cultural heritage site. The ancient wall of Yushan County was first built in the 40th year of the Jiajing reign of the Ming Dynasty (1561 AD), “enclosing the city over seven li.” The wall was sixteen chi high, with crenellations four chi tall, a base width of eighteen chi, and four gates on the east, west, south, and north. During the Longqing era, the Small East Gate and Small West Gate were added. Due to natural erosion and urban development, most of the wall has been demolished, but three gates—the Great East Gate, Small East Gate, and South Gate—still remain today, along with 1,430 meters of the Ming Dynasty city wall in the southeast. Requirements for investors: Investors are welcome to develop the site under the premise of preservation. Main construction projects include: restoring the wall height to 5.33 meters, the crenellations to 1.33 meters, rebuilding the gate towers on the three gates, and relocating sheds built too close to the wall. The Yushan ancient city wall was built during the Zhengde era of the Ming Dynasty. At that time, the city wall had gates in the east, south, west, and north—“four gates”—but now only a section of the ancient wall remains at the East Gate.

The majestic East Gate of the ancient wall, originally the main eastern gate of Yushan, is largely well-preserved. Yushan County is located in the northeast of Jiangxi Province, between 117°52' and 118°25' east longitude and 28°30' and 28°59' north latitude. It borders Kaihua, Changshan, and Jiangshan counties/cities of Zhejiang Province to the east, Guangfeng to the south, Shangrao to the southwest, and Dexing to the north. According to the 1784 edition of the Yushan County Annals, the Yushan city wall was built in the Xinyou year of the Jiajing reign of the Ming Dynasty (1561), “enclosing the city over seven li, twenty zhang high, eleven zhang wide, with crenellations four zhang tall.” It had six gates: the Large and Small East Gates, the Large and Small West Gates, the North Gate, and the South Gate. The gate towers and the section of wall from the North Gate to the Small West Gate have been demolished around the time of the founding of the People’s Republic of China, leaving only remnants of the eastern and southern gates.

Yushan City Wall is now a provincial-level cultural heritage site.
