Ruins of Luoguo City

The Ruins of Luoguo City is a cultural heritage site protected at the provincial level in Hubei Province.

The Ruins of Luoguo City are situated in Group 2 (Luojiaying) of Hongshansi Village, Wuan Town, Nanzhang County. This site dates back to the Neolithic Age and the Eastern Zhou to Han Dynasties. To the east lies Liuhe, a tributary of the Mian River, to the north is Heihe, the western source of Liuhe, and to the south it faces Wulong Temple. To the west, there is a 1-meter-deep, 1.7-meter-wide earthen water ditch that served as a moat. The site is surrounded by water on three sides, with a gourd-shaped layout elevated 4–5 meters above the river surface, stretching approximately 1,000 meters from east to west and about 600 meters from north to south. About 100 meters east of the site, there used to be an ancient city, parts of which, including the city gate and wall foundations, were still visible in the 1960s but were gradually leveled over the years. During the 1989 cultural relics survey, and again from December 14 to 17, 2006, when a key research project titled “Study on the Evolution of Chu Capital Cities and Territories” — under the National Key Research Base for Humanities and Social Sciences, led by Professor Xu Shaohua, Director of the Historical Geography Research Institute and doctoral supervisor at Wuhan University, along with doctoral students Yin Hongbin and Zheng Wei — conducted field investigations in Yicheng, Nanzhang, and Xiangyang within the Xiangyi Plain of Xiangfan, a cultural layer about 1.5 meters thick was discovered on the surface of the Ruins of Luoguo City and in collapsed sections along the riverbank. This layer contained artifacts from both the Neolithic Age and the Eastern Zhou period. Neolithic items mainly included stone shovels, scrapers, and red pottery pieces such as bowls, jars, and tripods made of sandy clay. Eastern Zhou relics were entirely pottery fragments, predominantly gray clay pottery with some sandy red clay, decorated mostly with cord patterns and a few diamond patterns. The vessel types included li tripods, jars, basins, roof tiles, and tubular tiles.

The discovery of this site provides important physical evidence for the study of the origins and development of Chu culture in the middle reaches of the Han River.
