Jinjiang Catholic Church

The Jinjiang Catholic Church is a cultural heritage site protected at the provincial level in Jiangxi Province.

The Jinjiang Catholic Church complex (including the main church, official hall, Peide Girls' Primary School (Wenzha Theological Seminary), auditorium, priests' building (Peide Girls' Middle School), parishioners' dormitory, church hospital, and bathhouse)

Located on Chongxu Mountain in Jinjiang Town and also known as St. Louis Church, it was jointly constructed in the 7th year of the Republic of China (1918) by the American and French Catholic missions. The French mission, led by Father Tien Lienuo, with funding provided by St. Mary’s Church of San Francisco, USA, completed the project in four years, finishing construction in the 11th year of the Republic of China. Covering an area of approximately 25,000 square meters with a built-up area of 6,000 square meters, the complex consists of 17 major structures including the chapel, official hall, priests' building, auditorium, and Peide Girls' Middle School. Most buildings are of brick-and-wood construction, featuring a fusion of Chinese and Western styles dominated by Roman architecture. The main structure, “St. Louis Chapel” (the chapel), measures 24 meters in length, 13 meters in width, and 12 meters in height, with red stone pillars and Gothic architectural features. At the time, it was regarded as a “sacred site” by Catholics across 21 counties (cities) in the regions of Fuzhou, Shangrao, and Jingdezhen, and was one of the five major dioceses of the Catholic Church in Jiangxi. The Jinjiang Catholic Church complex has withstood nearly a century and most of its structures remain well-preserved. It is now recognized as a “Provincial-Level Cultural Heritage Site of Jiangxi Province.”

Jinjiang Town: A town under the jurisdiction of Yujiang County. It is a national pilot town for small-town development. From the first year of the Duan'gong era of the Song Dynasty (988) to 1962, it served successively as the county seat of Anren and Yujiang. Originally named Xing’an Town, it was renamed Jinjiang Town during the Qing Dynasty. Located in the northern part of the county on the eastern bank of the lower reaches of the Xin River, the town government is based in Jinjiang, 23 kilometers from the county seat. The town covers an area of 72 square kilometers and has a population of 34,000. National Highway 206 passes through the area.
