Lian'an County Revolutionary Martyrs Memorial Tower
The Lian'an County Revolutionary Martyrs Memorial Tower is a classic site on China’s red tourism routes.
Lian'an County Revolutionary Martyrs Memorial Tower:
Approximately 400 meters west of the county town lies a small hill covered with a mixed forest of fir, cypress, pine, camphor, tung, chestnut, and bamboo trees, creating a tranquil and pleasant scenery. Atop the hill stands a tall tower that adds a solemn and respectful atmosphere to the area — this is the Lian'an County Revolutionary Martyrs Memorial Tower.
The Lian'an Revolutionary Martyrs Memorial Tower was constructed in early 1964 and completed on August 30 of the same year. The entire memorial covers an area of 30 mu, with a building area of 390 square meters. The tower is 16 meters high, and its monument is a square pillar inlaid with white marble on all sides. The front of the monument bears four gilded characters reading “Supreme Glory,” while the back features the inscription “Long Live the Fallen Martyrs” by Marshal Zhu De. The east and west sides of the monument are inscribed with “Immortal” and “The People’s Heroes Are Immortal,” respectively. A red star is mounted atop the tower, symbolizing the radiant glory of the great Communist Party of China.
Lian'an is a veteran revolutionary base area. Since the Second Revolutionary Civil War, Lian'an has served as a frontline post in the revolutionary base and as the northern gateway to the Central Soviet Area, making tremendous contributions to developing revolutionary armed forces and fighting the enemy. In 1929, the Lian (An)–Yi (Huang)–Chong (Ren) Central County Committee of the Communist Party of China was established here, leading workers and peasants in overthrowing local tyrants, redistributing land, and fighting for the establishment of a Soviet government. In 1930, revolutionary veterans such as Mao Zedong, Zhou Enlai, and Zhu De came to places like Jinzhu in Lian'an to lead the revolutionary struggle, inspiring many passionate locals to join the cause. During the Fourth Counter-Encirclement Campaign in 1933, the Lian'an Independent Regiment cooperated with the First Front Red Army in the Battle of Dengxian Bridge, delivering a fatal blow to the enemy by annihilating two divisions totaling over ten thousand troops. From the Second Revolutionary Civil War, the War of Resistance Against Japan, to the victory of the Third Revolutionary Civil War, 2,237 outstanding sons and daughters of Lian'an, including Zhang Fangshuo, Zhang Ying, Zeng Jidong, Cao Zuoxin, and Chen Minghui, sacrificed their lives for the liberation of the proletariat.
In June 2003, the county carried out a comprehensive restoration of the memorial tower. In May 2006, the Lian'an Revolutionary Martyrs Memorial Tower was approved by the Fuzhou Municipal People's Government as a patriotic education base.
