Tomb of Dong Yu

The Tomb of Dong Yu is a cultural heritage site protected at the provincial level in Jiangxi Province.

The Tomb of Dong Yu, also known as the Tomb of Minister Dong, is located on Baihe Xing Mountain in Luyuan Village, Zhaoxian Town, Le'an County, on the upper reaches of the Wu River in the ancient village of Liukeng. It is a Ming dynasty tomb and a provincial-level cultural heritage site in Jiangxi Province.

This tomb was built by the Ministry of Works and inspected by the Ministry of Rites, with an imperial “Imperial Decree Burial” stele. In front of the tomb stands a spirit way made of large stone slabs, flanked by stone statues of officials, horses, and sheep, all well-preserved. Ascending nine steps, there are three large stone tablets. The central one is inscribed with “Tomb of the Late Mr. Dong Kuowan, Scholar-official of the Ministry of Punishments and Minister of Justice, Posthumously Honored as Junior Guardian of the Heir Apparent,” written by Zhang Wei, Scholar-official and Grand Secretary of Xinjian. At the top of the tomb stands an “Imperial Decree Burial” stele surrounded by carvings of dragons and cloud patterns, issued by Emperor Shenzong.

Dong Yu (1537–1606, or alternatively 1546–1606), courtesy name Weiyi, style name Kuowan, was the 21st-generation descendant of the Dong family of Liukeng. He was from Gangtian Village, Zhaoxian Town, Le'an. A scholar and official of the Ming dynasty, he rose to the position of Minister of Justice during the Wanli era. He passed the imperial examination in 1565 and became a jinshi in 1571, later serving as magistrate of Dongguan County. Zhaoxian Town is located in the southern part of Le'an County and is one of the key towns targeted for poverty alleviation and development by the province. It borders Nancun Township and Jinzhu Township to the east, Yongfeng County to the south, Huping Township to the west, and Zengtian Town to the north.
