Former Site of the Changyuan Temple Ambush Battle:

Located in Shazhou Town, Nanfeng County. Between November 1932 and January 1933, the First Front Red Army, commanded by Zhou Enlai, Zhu De, Peng Dehuai, and others, fought three consecutive battles in Nanfeng – at Weishui Bridge, Huangshidu, and Changyuan Temple. In January 1933, the 5th Red Army Corps held off and pinned down an enemy force three times its size at Changyuan Temple on the left side of Huangshidu, where the battle was exceptionally fierce. On January 8, as the mission to contain the enemy had been successfully accomplished and the battle was about to end, Zhao Botao, Deputy Commander and Chief of Staff of the 5th Red Army Corps, was unfortunately shot in the right forehead while directing the battle and died a heroic death. The site of this battle has now been marked and serves as a patriotic education base in Nanfeng.

Shazhou Town: Originally named Po Gan, Shazhou Town was settled in the first year of the Tianyou era of the Tang Dynasty (904 AD), when people migrated here from Baigan in Poyang. The original name, Baigan, was retained but gradually evolved into Po Gan. Later, due to local administrative reforms, to distinguish it from the Po Gan Commune of Dongxiang County, the name was changed to Shazhou.

Our town is located between 116°43′56″–116°52′55″ east longitude and 27°40′4″–27°47′6″ north latitude. It lies in the northeastern part of Nanfeng County, at the junction of Nanfeng, Jinxi, and Zixi counties.
