Shengshan Ancient Temple is located in Ludong Village, Zhuliang Town, Nancheng County, Jiangxi Province, about 500 meters to the right of National Highway 206, offering convenient transportation. The temple faces west and is nestled against the east, boasting elegant scenery. It is a historic temple with a thousand years of cultural heritage. Originally named "Jinlong Temple," it was first built in the early Tang Dynasty. During the Qing Dynasty's Qianlong era, due to the emperor’s travel and turmoil caused by treacherous court officials, the empress set out to find the emperor. Along with her maid "CaiTengxiang," she passed by this temple, stayed there, and observed a vegetarian diet while chanting Buddhist sutras, praying for the emperor’s swift return and the restoration of peace. The empress’s sincere devotion moved the Buddhas. Before long, the emperor returned safely to the capital. He personally visited the temple to bring the empress back to the palace. The maid "CaiTengxiang" then asked the emperor — to allow her to remain in the temple to continue her spiritual practice, praying for the emperor’s well-being. Her reverence moved the emperor, who then adopted her as his adopted daughter and bestowed her family name as part of the Linji school of Buddhism, with historical steles still preserved today. The temple was subsequently expanded and renamed "Shengshan Temple," and the emperor also gifted numerous treasures. Fertile fields and over a thousand acres of land were allocated to the temple. During the tenure of the former abbot Fu, the temple held ordination ceremonies, accommodated over a hundred monks, and produced many eminent monks. During the Cultural Revolution, the temple’s incense offerings were temporarily halted, and all precious cultural relics and Buddha statues were destroyed. Later, it was repurposed as a farm. After the 1980s, with the implementation of the national reform and opening-up policy, people’s living standards gradually improved, and religious sites flourished once more. With the generous donations from devout Buddhists and patrons, and the support of the government, the temple was rebuilt in 1988. It now includes a main hall, ancestral hall, Guanyin Hall, living quarters, and more. Today, as part of the overall planning for this ancient sacred site, we aim to establish clear Buddhist cultural precepts. We hope that all patrons, devotees, and supporters will cultivate bodhicitta and offer their support as they are able — the merit is boundless. May the Buddha bless the world with peace, ensure national prosperity and the people’s well-being, and grant all good men and women health and safety.
