Beishan Site

The Beishan Site was discovered during a preliminary cultural relics survey conducted for the construction of the Liaofang Reservoir. In November 2005, with approval from the National Cultural Heritage Administration granted upon application by the Jiangxi Provincial Institute of Cultural Relics and Archaeology, a salvage excavation began at the Beishan Shang-Zhou cultural site located southwest of Daxu Village, Wanfang Town, Nancheng County. Major artifacts unearthed included stone tools such as arrowheads, darts, adzes, and perforated stone ornaments, as well as over 80 pottery items such as tripods, gui vessels, cauldron-shaped jars, pots, vessel lids, pedestals, spinning whorls, and pottery paddles—finds that are rare in the history of Fuzhou. The excavation of the Beishan Shang-Zhou cultural site once again provides concrete evidence that this ancient region of Nancheng had been inhabited and thrived more than 3,000 years ago.

Scientific excavations have revealed that the main cultural strata of both the Wugangshan Site and the Beishan Site belong to the late phase of the "Wannian Type Culture" from the late Shang to early Zhou periods, as well as the early Western Zhou period. The excavations at these two sites have added new materials for the study of the Wannian Type Culture of the Shang Dynasty in Jiangxi, especially its cultural content from the late Shang period. The discovery of early Western Zhou remains also makes it easier to trace the historical path by which the Shang-Zhou cultures of the Gan River and Poyang Lake basins gradually merged into the unified Chinese civilization. Meanwhile, these excavations have filled a gap in archaeological research in the Xujian River basin, lifting the veil on the early civilization of Nancheng County. Furthermore, they provide strong evidence to refute the claim that “Shang-Zhou culture did not extend beyond the Yangtze River,” and hold significant archaeological value for studying the history of Nancheng.
