Yangshan

The name "Yangshan" comes from the phrase "too towering to climb." Here, the landscape boasts spectacular mountains and waters, winding stone paths, and rushing waterfalls. Most remarkably, even in early and mid-spring, snow can fall on Yangshan, glistening crystal-clear — the so-called "Yangshan Snow Accumulation," which never fails to inspire awe. In ancient times, Yangshan was regarded as the "protective mountain of the region." It is located on a branch of the Wugong Mountain Range and was named for its peaks that "rise thousands of feet high, towering and unclimbable." The area features overlapping mountain ridges, lush trees, crisscrossing streams, and continuous waterfalls. In spring, azaleas bloom in vibrant red, covering the mountains like drifting clouds — a magnificent sight. In summer, cascading springs and misty peaks create an otherworldly, fairy-tale ambiance. By autumn, the forests turn into a riot of colors, casting a dazzling glow across the hillsides that intoxicates the beholder. The area enjoys a unique climate where snow can fall even in early and mid-spring, often lingering for dozens of days without melting. Once winter arrives, even slight overcast skies bring snow to Yangshan. Whenever the sky clears after a snowfall, the snow atop Jiyun Mountain Peak — at an elevation of 1,034 meters — remains pristine and frozen for long periods, forming a stunning high-mountain snow scene that delights the eye. This scenic wonder of the Jiangnan region is known as "Yangshan Snow Accumulation." The mystical beauty of Yangshan has drawn literati and poets throughout the ages. Han Yu, one of the Eight Great Prose Masters of the Tang and Song dynasties, composed a sacrificial text titled "Prayer for Rain Dedicated to the God of Yangshan" here, expressing his reverence for the mountain. Among the forested springs, steep cliffs, secluded temples, and pagoda forests of Yangshan, one can still find the names of historical figures such as Xin Qiji (a patriotic poet of the Southern Song Dynasty), Zhang Shi (a Southern Song philosopher), and Yan Song (a Ming Dynasty prime minister). For these historical personalities, Yangshan was not only a place of serene and enchanting scenery but also, due to its profound cultural heritage, a tranquil retreat in their life journeys.
