Nanchan Pavilion

Nanchan Pavilion is a cultural relic protection unit of Jiangxi Province.

Nanchan Pavilion, located at the intersection on the south side of Zhonggui Road in Yichun City (currently under renovation). It is a hip-and-gable roofed, square structure with sides measuring 16 meters, featuring a four-sloped roof, double eaves, and glazed tiles. The wooden structure uses a post-and-lintel system. Four pillars form one bay, with a width of five bays and a depth of six bays—all wooden round columns featuring carved patterns, surrounded by windows and doors. The panel doors and partition doors inside the pavilion are all carved with diamond-patterned latticework. Originally named "Caochuan," meaning the house of the penal department, it was built during the ShaoSheng era (1094–1097 AD) of the Northern Song Dynasty by Mr. Li Zhongyuan, who came from Lu Zhou, Anhui (the hometown of Bao Zheng), to serve as the Judicial Officer of Yuanzhou Prefecture, overseeing criminal law and litigation. This man was not only a learned Confucian scholar with governance talent but also a Buddhist devotee with a compassionate heart. During his tenure, he once invited the famous literary figure Huang Tingjian to stay briefly, enjoying the moonlight and engaging in deep conversations about Buddhism and Zen by candlelight through the western window, resonating very well.
