Zhengjiatao Ancient Tombs Cluster

The Zhengjiatao Ancient Tombs Cluster is a cultural heritage site protected by Jiangxi Province.

The Zhengjiatao Ancient Tombs Cluster is situated about 15 kilometers west of Jing’an County, in Zhengjia Group, Laibao Village, Shuikou Township. The burial grounds are found on a high, flat hill within a triangular area formed by the confluence of two streams. The summit of the hill is flat and elevated 2–4 meters above the current paddy fields. An east-west road traverses the site, and hundreds of villagers live in the vicinity. The soil here is fertile, vegetation lush, and rainfall abundant—ideal conditions for human habitation and farming. Further away, there are numerous small hills and slopes ranging from 10 to 50 meters in height. The northern side features taller hills, while the southern area is more open.

The Zhengjiatao tomb site is the earliest discovered plateau-type Late Neolithic burial remains in Jiangxi Province, dating back approximately 5,000–5,500 years. It covers an area of about 5,000 square meters (with an officially protected area of 3,500 square meters). Through two excavation phases, a total of 34 vertical earthen pit tombs were uncovered, yielding over 200 artifacts. This discovery filled a gap in the archaeological understanding of Jiangxi’s Late Neolithic period and provided crucial physical evidence for studying the regional division, chronology, and cultural relationships of Late Neolithic archaeological cultures in the province, as well as their connections with surrounding cultures.
