Kuangzhong Garden

Kuangzhong Garden is located on Dongmen Mountain in Jing’an County and is an independent scenic area within the Sanzhaolun National Model Forest Park. It was built to commemorate the 600th anniversary of the birth of Kuang Zhong, one of China’s ancient “Three Upright Magistrates.” The garden features Kuang Zhong’s tomb, a bronze statue of Kuang Zhong, as well as over ten cultural sites including Qingfeng Pavilion, Gangu Pavilion, Tinghe Pavilion, and the Revolutionary Martyrs’ Monument. Among them, Qingfeng Pavilion bears a couplet that reads, “With only a shoulder-load of luggage, ask how many in the feudal officialdom can compare; With sleeves clean as the wind, behold how the Suzhou prefect conducted himself”—a true reflection of Magistrate Kuang’s integrity and dedication to the people. Premier Zhou Enlai once spoke highly of Kuang Zhong’s clean reputation, and the famous Kunqu Opera piece “Fifteen Strings of Cash” is based on his life story. The garden is lush with pines and cypresses, dotted with ancient trees. When the mountain breeze blows, the bamboo sways like waves, the pines rustle, and fragrances fill the air. The winding stone steps and secluded paths offer both the wild charm of a forest park and the refined elegance of a Jiangnan-style garden.

Historical ruins, celebrity tombs, and science exploration are the main highlights of Kuangzhong Garden. The Dongmen Mountain site within the area is a hillside settlement from the Spring and Autumn Period, where archaeologists have unearthed numerous stone tools and pottery shards. The Saixia Mountain site is a village settlement dating from the Neolithic Age to the Shang and Zhou dynasties. As a provincial-level cultural relic protection unit, it is over 5,000 years old and represents a precious prehistoric site in the Gan River basin, offering valuable resources for historical and cultural exploration. Jiangxi Province’s earliest-established forest park—Kuangzhong Garden—is situated to the east of the county town. It is the burial site of Kuang Zhong, a renowned historical figure and upright official from the Ming Dynasty, making it a vivid educational resource for celebrity culture tours and historical education. It also serves as a great leisure and recreational spot for local residents of Jing’an after work.
