Daxianyan Scenic Area

Daxianyan Scenic Area is a national AA-level tourist attraction.

The Daxianyan Scenic Area is located in Tao Tang Township, Yongfeng County, 50 kilometers from the county seat, 10 kilometers from Tengtian Town—the second largest town in Yongfeng—and over 30 kilometers from Liukeng Ancient Village in Le’an. A special shuttle bus has been launched between Yongfeng County and the Daxianyan Scenic Area, and the bus route from Tengtian Town to Yuannan Village also passes right in front of the scenic area, making transportation relatively convenient.

Currently, the main attraction open to visitors in the scenic area is the Daxianyan Karst Cave. The cave is formed from limestone and took approximately 250 million years of geological processes to develop. The Daxianyan Karst Cave is about 3,000 meters long, with a width and height generally ranging from 10 meters to several dozen meters. The cave is grand in scale and majestic in presence, making it one of the largest karst caves in southern China. The structure of the cave is highly complex. It has been discovered that the cave consists of three levels vertically, but only one level has currently been developed for tourist visits. The cave’s attractions are mainly composed of stalactites and stalagmites, which vary in shape, glisten like jade, and feature fantastical, vivid forms. The cave can be roughly divided into three sections, comprising a total of 27 scenic spots.

The main attractions in the first section include:

1. Father of the Earth: Revered as the creator of humanity and the shaper of heaven and earth, hence called the Father of the Earth. Some visitors jokingly say, “Men laugh heartily when they see it, women blush shyly.” Hanging from the cave floor around the "Father of the Earth" are clusters of stalactite strips, resembling elephant trunks, eagle beaks, dragon whiskers, and monkey heads. Legend has it that these were placed by the Eight Immortals to have beast spirits guard the cave entrance.

2. Water-Dripping Guanyin: The Goddess of Mercy blesses you with peace and happiness.

3. Three Immortals Standing Tall: Legend says that Iron-Crutch Li, Lü Dongbin, and He Xiangu, the master and disciples among the Eight Immortals, once met here. To enhance the festive atmosphere, the cave ceiling and walls display fantastical scenes such as monkeys dancing, sheep strolling in spring, a dragon soaring, Guanyin sitting on a lotus, and a child blowing a horn.

4. Immortal Turtle: In legend, the Immortal Turtle carried the Eight Immortals across the sea and fought sea monsters, achieving a great victory.

5. He Xiangu Ascending: It is said that He Xiangu, one of the Eight Immortals and a woman from Zengcheng in the Tang Dynasty, became immortal at the age of fourteen after consuming mica powder. She moved swiftly and often traveled the world with cranes, ascending into the sky, turning stones into gold to help the poor, and saving all beings.

6. Boat-Shaped Rock: Iron-Crutch Li used this boat to battle the Snail Spirit.

7. Thunder Resounding Pool: Legend says this pool is unfathomably deep. Whenever thunder and lightning strike, it emits a humming sound before slowly closing up seamlessly—an extraordinary work of nature crafted by the Eight Immortals.

8. Eight Immortals Gathering Platform: Legend has it that the Eight Immortals often gathered here.

9. Fortune Breast: Its shape resembles a breast. Folklore says that those who touch it will gain abundant fortune.

The main attractions in the second section include:

1. A water storage pool once used by anti-Yuan resistance forces

2. Vine Spirit

3. Immortal Water Pool: This spring never dries up. Even if the Yangtze and Yellow Rivers run dry, it remains full, and people call it the Immortal Spring.

4. Beacon Tower: Legend says that Luo Kaili, a patriotic hero from Yongfeng who resisted the Yuan Dynasty, trained his troops in this cave. The "Beacon Tower" served as his command post.

5. Demon-Suppressing Pagoda: Legend says it was jointly built by the Eight Immortals to suppress demons and eliminate evil, bringing relief to the suffering.

6. Vast Immortal Fields

7. Guanyin Accompanied by Weiduo (Once in a Lifetime): Folklore says Weiduo wanted to marry Guanyin, but she refused to wed her whole life. Weiduo stayed by her side until they both ascended to immortality together.

8. Bedroom of the Queen Mother of the West

9. Hidden Room of Patriotic Hero Luo Kaili (to be developed): This is based on a true folk story.

The main attractions in the third section include:

1. Dragon Head Dripping Water: The dragon head on the cave ceiling drips water year-round. Visitors who wash their hands with it are said to leave their bad luck behind and take good luck with them.

2. Recluse Immortal Hall: This hall is several zhang (a traditional Chinese unit of length) in both length and width. On the left are a pig-head stone and a jade-rabbit stone; on the right are a beauty’s dressing table and a millstone. The cave ceiling features scenes of a green dragon and a white snake. Legend says the Eight Immortals often relaxed here.

3. Divine Pillar Immortal Pile: Legend says this is a treasure established by the Eight Immortals in the cave to suppress evil. Demons and ghosts would reveal their true forms and turn to ashes upon seeing these pillars.

4. The Lion Looks Back.

5. Immortal’s Lounge: This lounge is located deep underground, serene and elegant. A clear spring tinkles, resembling “dripping water from a cliff in sunny weather like rain, and a cool breeze in summer like autumn.” It’s akin to the fairyland of Penglai. Legend has it that the Eight Immortals resided here during their time in this cave, each having their own designated spot.

6. Immortals’ Chess Table: Immortals often played chess at this table.

7. Wishing Pool: Visitors can toss coins into this pool to make a wish, which is said to come true.

8. Mortal-Immortal Boundary: This line marks the boundary between the realm of immortals and mortals. Legend says the “Eight Immortals” operated within this cave but never crossed this boundary. In the height of summer or severe winter, the temperature difference on either side of the boundary is remarkably distinct.

9. Taiping Rebellion Army Battle Site: At the cave entrance, there are man-made walls with firing ports, all built by the Taiping Army. It is said that during the Xianfeng era of the Qing Dynasty (1857), after a defeat in battle against the Qing army in Yongfeng County, a unit of the Taiping Army took refuge in the cave and continued their resistance for several years.

The south cave entrance has been developed with lodging facilities (Da Xian Yan Mountain Villa), dining buildings, a tourist activity center, shops, and more. These not only cater to the everyday needs of visitors for food, accommodation, and leisure, but can also host conferences for over 30 people. The scenic area enjoys an elegant environment—warm in winter, cool in summer—with murmuring springs, fresh air, birdsong, floral fragrance, and spring-like weather year-round, making it an ideal destination for sightseeing and vacationing.
