Former Site of the Command Post for the First Counter-Encirclement Campaign

The former site of the Command Post for the First Counter-Encirclement Campaign is a cultural heritage site protected at the provincial level in Jiangxi Province.

The former site of the Frontline Command Post for the First Major Counter-Encirclement Campaign at Huangzhuling is located on Huangzhuling Mountain in Xiaobie Village, Junbu. Huangzhuling in Junbu is the only route to Longgang. Although the current Huangzhuling no longer presents a scene of “lush red [foliage],” this is because after the founding of the People’s Republic, reforestation efforts replaced the original trees with fir trees—back then, the Longgang and Junbu area had many maple trees.

On December 24 and 26, 1930, the main force of the Red Army twice ambushed and defeated Tan Dao-yuan’s division in Xiaobu, Ningdu. However, Tan Dao-yuan’s troops held their position. As a result, Comrade Mao Zedong made a decisive move to shift the target westward, preparing to first eliminate Zhang Huizhan’s division. On December 29, the First Front Army of the Red Army, along with comrades such as Mao Zedong and Zhu De, moved from Xiaobu, Ningdu, to the Junbu area in Yongfeng. On the morning of December 30, 1930, Mao Zedong walked up a small path in the dark from Junbu Street and climbed to Huangzhuling, which is 20 li (approximately 10 kilometers) from Longgang and sits at an elevation of 430 meters. Soon after, Zhu De also arrived at Huangzhuling. They repurposed a local teahouse on the mountain as the headquarters’ counter-encirclement command post. Since the Red Army’s General Front Committee and Commander-in-Chief were also present at Huangzhuling, it was also referred to as the Counter-Encirclement Headquarters.

During the stunning and world-renowned Battle of Longgang, the Red Army annihilated over 9,000 troops of the enemy’s 18th Division and captured Zhang Huizhan, the frontline commander-in-chief and division commander of the 18th Division, securing a great victory in the First Counter-Encirclement Campaign in the Central Soviet Area.
