Shuangxi Dashimen Village
Dashimen Village is located in Shuangxi Township, Shangyou County, beside the “Shangsan Line” highway, with the Sixia River flowing through it. It is over 50 kilometers from the county seat. According to historical records, it got its name because there are two large stone walls at the entrance of the village that resemble a gate. On August 28, 1928, Mao Zedong passed through this area on his way back to Jinggangshan, stayed at Ju Ying Lou, and held a military conference.
This is an ancient village. According to the Zeng Family Genealogy, during the Duanping era of the Southern Song Dynasty, Shangyou County’s Zeng Shaosi migrated here, followed by the Wu and Tian families. The village still preserves architectural complexes from the Ming and Qing dynasties. Most of the old residences were built against the mountains, with walls made of blue bricks, painted beams, and carved eaves, all of which are particularly spectacular. The paths are paved with cobblestones and wind through serene, secluded spots, exuding an elegant charm. There is a more than 600-year-old ginkgo tree with towering ancient trunks that require five or six people to encircle with their arms. Although the trunk is rough and mottled, it is lush and vigorous, standing as the treasured landmark of Dashimen Village. An ancient village with ancient families. The Wu family’s “Zhengqing Mansion,” built during the Qing Dynasty and left behind by the family, features a unique style and exquisite carvings. Such architecture certainly did not belong to ordinary households hundreds of years ago. A birthday plaque inscribed with “Long-Eared Scholar of the Aged” hangs in the main hall, bestowed in the 29th year of the Daoguang reign of the Qing Dynasty (1849), shining golden and resplendent. The person being celebrated was certainly no ordinary farmer-scholar either.
At the entrance of Dashimen, there is a cliff carving from the Western Jin Dynasty, referred to by experts as the “No. 1 Stele of Jiangxi” and classified as a provincial-level cultural relic protection unit. The inscription reads: “Written by Yu Quhu in the second year of Jianxing.” According to research, “Jianxing” was the reign title of Emperor Min of the Western Jin Dynasty, and the second year of Jianxing corresponds to 314 AD, which is 1,685 years ago. Judging from the inscription, it carries a distinct flavor of the Wei and Jin styles. Historians point out that the Wei and Jin period marked the official inauguration of China’s early feudal society and the first awakening of humanity. Its literature and art also became a progressive voice of history gradually breaking free from the slave society. The emphasis on and lamentation over life and death, as well as the sighs and reflections on the brevity of life, spread widely from the Jian’an era through the Jin and Song periods, and from the lower and middle classes to the royal nobility. For quite a long time and across a considerable space, these became the typical tones of the entire era.
Entering Dashimen is like stepping into an ancient cultural library. Some books may be understood by you, but many others require careful pondering.
