The Nuantang Hot Spring in Pingfu Township, Shangyou County, is located 50 kilometers northwest of Shangyou County. It lies in the western part of the Central Jiangxi Uplift within the Cathaysia Block, at the junction of the north–south Zhuguang Mountain structural belt and the east–west Nanling structural belt. The springs emerge as a cluster at the southern end of the Shangyou County geothermal field (hot spring area), in Nuantang Village, Shangzhai, Pingfu Township.

The Nuantang Hot Spring is located beneath a mountain ridge at an elevation of 420 meters, with the spring outlet at 300 meters above sea level. The water temperature is 39.5°C, and the flow rate is 2.81 liters per second. Pumping tests predict that, with a well diameter of 0.2032 m and a drawdown of 7.20 m, the exploitable geothermal water resource (Grade E) amounts to 2,561 m³/day. Measurements show that the surface geothermal water temperature is 43°C, and the water is rich in Na⁺, F⁻, H₂SiO₃, and SO₄²⁻. The fluorine content in the underground hot water of the Nuantang mining area is 13.4 mg/L, and the metasilicic acid content is 93.14 mg/L, reaching or exceeding the “medicinal value concentration” and “mineral water concentration.” The geothermal water can be classified as silicate water and fluoride water, suitable for tourism, vacation, bathing, medical treatment, and heating. For example, Beijing’s Xiaotangshan Hot Spring is a bicarbonate-sulfate-sodium-type fluorine and metasilicic acid medicinal thermal mineral water, which has been used for medical rehabilitation for over 50 years. Clinical practice has shown that this hot spring has good therapeutic effects on skin diseases and arthritis. When comprehensive therapies—such as physiotherapy, exercise therapy, and medication—are applied, they often lead to improvement, and in some cases significant efficacy—for conditions such as rheumatism, arthritis, musculoskeletal disorders; hypertension and coronary heart disease; respiratory diseases like bronchitis and asthma; digestive system disorders; as well as skin conditions such as psoriasis and dermatitis.

The Nuantang mining area features favorable heat-controlling, heat-conducting, and heat-storing structures along with a suitable lithological combination. The northeast and northeast–east trending fault structures, along with their derived extensional fractures (both vertical and horizontal), are well-developed, facilitating the storage and movement of groundwater and thus serving as excellent heat-conducting channels and aquicludes. Through geophysical exploration and other survey methods, it is possible to discover medium–low to medium–high temperature hot water with higher temperatures and greater yields. The surrounding area boasts abundant tourism resources, including the notable Wuzhifeng Scenic Area and Qiyun Mountain Forest Landscape Reserve.

Due to historically poor transportation, the Nuantang Hot Spring mining area has not been fully developed or utilized and is currently only used for civilian purposes such as seedling cultivation, seed soaking, and bathing. Surveys indicate that there are no other hot spring facilities within a one-hour radius of Ganzhou City, while the drive from Ganzhou to Pingfu takes just one hour. Today, thanks to the interconnected road network, the hot spring mining area can be conveniently and quickly accessed. With appropriate development approaches and measures, it is hoped that the water temperature can be increased and the flow rate expanded, enabling integrated development of the abundant tourism resources alongside the Nuantang Hot Spring to maximize overall benefits.
